I don't know actually. I guess it's just... however our Personas are formed, so maybe whatever was in our hidden feelings and our Shadows.
Yu's first Persona, Izanagi, was strong in lightning. Kanji's is, too. Chie and Teddie have ice, Yukiko has fire, and Naoto kind of has strengths in a bunch of stuff.

But I suppose it wasn't as much of a trial as getting your Persona was for you, so perhaps that's only fair that yours came with impressive abilities.
